How We Cut a Client’s Cloud Server Bill by 60% Without Downtime

A client came to us paying an eye-watering monthly cloud bill for infrastructure that was, frankly, asleep most of the time. Three weeks later their bill was 60% lower and their site was actually faster. No magic — just measurement and good engineering.

The problem: provisioning for a peak that never came

Like many businesses, they had sized their servers for an imagined worst case and never revisited it. CPU sat at 4% utilisation. Memory was half-used. They were paying for headroom they would never touch.

Measure first, change second

We never resize on a hunch. We collected two weeks of metrics — CPU, memory, disk I/O and network — to understand real demand, including genuine traffic peaks. Only then did we have the data to right-size with confidence.

What we changed

  • Right-sized the application servers to instances that matched real usage, with sensible headroom
  • Moved static assets and backups to cheaper object storage
  • Added caching (object cache and a CDN) so smaller servers handled more traffic
  • Scheduled non-production environments to shut down outside working hours
  • Cleaned up orphaned volumes and unattached IPs silently costing money every month

Faster and cheaper

Counter-intuitively, performance improved. Caching and a CDN took load off the origin, so pages rendered faster even on smaller instances. The lesson: bigger servers are rarely the answer — the right architecture is.

Cloud bills creep up quietly. A periodic review of what you’re actually using almost always finds savings, and reinvesting a fraction of them into caching and monitoring pays for itself many times over.
